Traffic nightmares continue as TxDOT works on numerous projects

SAN ANTONIO — The year is beginning to wind down, however some TxDOT projects are simply beginning to ramp up.

TxDOT broke floor on the central portion of the I-35 Northeast Expansion (NEX) in May. Construction on the $1.5 billion project began in June.

Laura Lopez is the spokesperson for TxDOT. She mentioned this project is supposed to make your commute sooner and simpler by including 9.5 miles of elevated, non-tolled lanes from I-410 North to FM-3009.

“That’s going to help with congestion along the I-35 corridor,” Lopez mentioned. “We understand it is an inconvenience and we’re trying our best to get this project completed. Unfortunately, it is in the early stages.”

Lopez mentioned crews are at the moment focusing on geotechnical engineering and a few drill shaft work. Thankfully, most of this may be carried out throughout nightly closures.

“It seems very minor right now,” Lopez mentioned. “But be expecting, once the new year starts, some more construction.”
