Traffic deaths increased 12% in Arizona last year

The Arizona Department of Transportation says the overall variety of automotive crashes in the state increased by 22% in 2021.

PHOENIX — The variety of individuals killed in site visitors collisions increased by 12% in 2021, in accordance with new knowledge not too long ago launched by the Arizona Department of Transportation.

The company’s annual “Crash Facts” report reveals Arizona continues to see a rising variety of car-related deaths on its roadways every year. 

A decade in the past, Arizona reported having 825 site visitors fatalities all through the state. Now ADOT is reporting at the very least 1,180 deaths in its 2021 report. 

Just in the last year, site visitors deaths jumped by 12% in comparison with numbers seen in 2020 and the overall variety of automotive crashes increased by 22%.

ADOT reported almost 10,000 extra car-related accidents in 2021 in comparison with the earlier year. 

The company says rushing and impaired driving had been a few of the most reoccurring components in site visitors crashes that resulted in a fatality. Not sporting seat belts was an element in virtually 25% of all fatalities, ADOT says.

“Reducing crashes, fatalities and injuries can’t be solved by state agencies alone because more than two-thirds of crashes occur on roads other than state highways,” ADOT wrote in an announcement.

Data from the Arizona Department of Transportation reveals that roadway fatalities have been steadily rising in Arizona over the last decade: 

  • 2011: 825 deaths  

  • 2012: 821 deaths 

  • 2013: 844 deaths 

  • 2014: 774 deaths 

  • 2015: 895 deaths 

  • 2016: 952 deaths 

  • 2017: 1,000 deaths 

  • 2018: 1,010 deaths 

  • 2019: 982 deaths 

  • 2020: 1,054 deaths
