Tonga earthquake: 7.3 magnitude temblor triggers tsunami advisory

A robust underwater earthquake struck Friday off Tonga within the southern Pacific, prompting authorities to problem a tsunami advisory. The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude 7.3 quake was centered 132 miles east-southeast of Neiafu, Tonga, at a depth of 15 miles. 

It predicted sturdy shaking however stated the likelihood of great injury or casualties was small.

The U.S. Tsunami Warning System issued a tsunami advisory, which is one step beneath a tsunami warning.

“Hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 km of the earthquake epicenter,” stated the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. The center later reported that “tsunami waves have been observed.”

Tonga’s meteorological service urged residents to maneuver inland and boaters to maneuver away from reefs.

“An urgent tsunami advisory is now in force for all of Tonga due to a strong earthquake being felt in the Kingdom tonight. Please move inland immediately until further advised,” the service stated on its Facebook web page.
