Art Institute lions to be removed temporarily for conservation work
CHICAGO (CBS) — The famous lions that flank the entrance steps of the Art Institute of Chicago will be coming down for a short while for upkeep.
On Tuesday of subsequent week, the bronze lions will be removed from their plinths the Michigan Avenue entrance to the esteemed artwork museum for conservation remedy. The Art Institute lions have been sculpted in 1893 by Edward Kemeys, and have been put in in entrance of the Art Institute the next year.

As the Park District notes, the Chicago Tribune quoted Kemeys as saying the lions have been conceived of as guards for the constructing. The south lion, Kemeys informed the newspaper, is “attracted by something in the distance which he is closely watching,” whereas the north lion “has his back up, and is ready for a roar and a spring.”
