PHOENIX — The Tolleson neighborhood was grateful for one another this year. Volunteers of all ages got here collectively earlier Thursday to serve meals to anybody who wished one. The annual feast within the metropolis has been a convention for 38 years and is lastly back in particular person after a two-year COVID-19 hiatus.
Smiles crammed the room as one after the other, plate by plate, folks celebrated collectively.
“I’m having fun,” stated volunteer, Hallie. “I’m excited.”
“This is a community event and it belongs to all of us,” stated Armando Morado.
Delicious meals like turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy and naturally pie, had been served to anybody who would love some.
“Today started Sunday,” stated Morado. “We cooked 80 turkeys, we de-boned the turkey, we cooked 760 pounds of yams and we did 300 pounds of ham.”
The meals is all donated and is cooked, plated, and served by volunteers who merely wish to assist make it a special occasion.
“This is for everyone,” stated Morado.
“I think it shows we’re taking initiative,” stated Hallie. “We care about the community and we want to help and we want to help people.”
“I feel like it’s important because, on Thanksgiving, you’re also giving love and thanks to anyone who’s been there for you,” stated volunteer, Ariana.
“It’s an honor,” stated Morado. “It’s an honor.”
Whether one was serving to, or having fun with the meals, folks stated this year, they’re grateful for one another.
“Family and friends coming together to just give thanks and being thankful for everything you have,” stated Hallie.
It’s anticipated round 1,700 meals had been served, and organizers cannot wait to serve much more subsequent year. They invite the Tolleson neighborhood to return out subsequent year and partake within the occasion.
